This project involved the structural and energy retrofitting of a remote public primary
school in Mastuj, Ghizer District. The aim was to enhance seismic safety and reduce heat
loss in extreme cold climate conditions. Following detailed NDTs, seismic capacity checks,
and interviews with locals, the team proposed a comprehensive retrofit plan that
addressed deteriorated timber elements, cracks in masonry, drainage issues, and poor
thermal performance.
Structural upgrades included replacing the veranda beam with locally sourced 6×6-inch
Peepal wood, laying new cement mortar flooring, demolishing and rebuilding the old
washroom, and stabilizing walls using shear strength verifications per ASCE guidelines. For
energy retrofitting, the attic and walls were insulated using locally available polystyrene
sheets. Additional measures included PET anti-fog window layers, silicon sealant, and
thermal curtains to minimize air infiltration and radiant heat loss.
