Located along the Yarkhun River in Upper Chitral, Chuinj Village faced serious threats from
slope instability and debris flows due to steep terrain, clayey soil, and moraine deposits.
These hazards had historically damaged homes, farmland, and vital infrastructure. In
response, Bendcrete Construction Services conducted comprehensive site visits,
interviews, and geotechnical analysis to assess vulnerability. A detailed hazard
assessment revealed that over 60 houses lay within the risk zone, with 2 hectares requiring
urgent intervention.
The proposed solution included outward-sloping terracing reinforced with 1:1 side-slope
earthen bunds. Slope stability analyses, using Bishop and Fellenius methods, confirmed
that the design achieved satisfactory safety factors. Social impact assessments
highlighted the importance of early warning systems, vegetation strategies, and local
livelihood diversification. This integrated approach aimed to enhance resilience, protect
lives, and preserve both landscape and community heritage.
